Call of Cthulhu unleashes new trailer and gameplay details
Cyanide Studio's Call of Cthulhu game, based on the influential tabletop RPG, released a new trailer for E3 2017. The new video gives us our best look yet at the plight of protagonist Edward Pierce as he struggles to maintain his sanity while investigating the murder of Sarah Hawkins on the mysterious island of Darkwater.
Investigate a detailed Lovecraftian world
Along with the new trailer, publisher Focus Interactive also released new information about how the game will play. Madness will have a major role, as is only right for a Call of Cthulhu game, and the title will feature "unique sanity and psychosis crisis mechanics." The game will also be a true RPG, allowing players to upgrade skills and abilities to aid in their investigations. Players will also be able to recruit small teams to help explore the island and solve different cases. It also sounds as though the setting will be somewhat open to exploration, and will feature choices which change the narrative and influence your relationship with other characters.
These new gameplay details make it much more clear what sort of game Call of Cthulhu is shaping up to be, and as a Lovecraft fan I'm excited about the opportunity to explore a semi-open RPG dripping with eldritch horrors. We've seen a number of Lovecraft-inspired games before, but often these titles are straightforward survival horror games with linear narratives. The idea of unraveling various Lovecraftian mysteries with a team of investigators hits at the core of what makes the Call of Cthulhu RPG great.
Call of Cthulhu is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime in 2017.
