The Long Dark is being adapted into a feature film

The Long Dark is a narrative driven game that’s been in Early Access and Xbox Game Preview for a few years now, but has amassed a huge following. So much so, that the game is now being made into a movie and it doesn’t even officially launch until August 1.

According to Deadline, Resident Evil movie producer Jeremey Bolt has teamed up with game development studio Hinterland Studio to turn The Long Dark into a feature film.

For those unfamiliar with The Long Dark, the game follows pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood as they navigate the northern Canadian wilderness after getting lost during a geomagnetic disaster. Although neither a director nor cast has been attached to the film, Raphael van Lierop, founder and creative director of Hinterland Studio, will write the script for the film.

“My goal with Hinterland – starting with The Long Dark — has always been to create original entertainment properties that could span multiple mediums, exploiting the storytelling potential of each form,” van Lierop said in a statement. “Partnering with Jeremy on this project is the first step in achieving that vision of true cross-platform storytelling in the world of The Long Dark.”

“I first reached out to Raphael, as a fan of The Long Dark,” added Bolt. “I was immediately taken by the game’s stunningly immersive landscapes, eerily solitary and realistic nature; it is an existential tale of moral, emotional and physical endurance with strong characters to build on; it is also a mystery. It is an honor to try to do justice to it on film.”
