Overwatch's Doomfist finally arrives
It’s finally happened folks. We all pretty much knew it was coming, but the long-awaited new playable character Doomfist has joined Overwatch’s roster. He’s available in the the Public Test Region (PTR) as of today, and will likely make the leap to the main game sometime soon.
Doomfist is a new Offense character, and was teased earlier on in the week with changes made to the Numbani map, but the sudden release comes as a bit of a surprise. Early speculation has it that Orisa, now Overwatch's second-newest character, is designed as something of a counter for Doomfist's abilities, which is part of why she was released before this character.
According to in-game lore, Reaper released Doomfist (AKA Akande Ogundimu) from prison, allowing him to join the fray with his massive gauntlet of destruction.
To quote Blizzard, "In addition to dealing ranged damage with his Hand Cannon, Doomfist can slam the ground, knock enemies into the air and off balance, or charge into the fray with his Rocket Punch. When facing a tightly packed group, Doomfist leaps out of view, then crashes down to earth with a spectacular Meteor Strike.”
Doomfist’s ult is called Meteor Strike, which involves him leaping into the air and smashing back down for big damage. Sounds pretty sweet.
He’s also rocking a passive ability known as “The Best Defense” which enables a shield every time one of his abilities is used successfully in battle.
Terry Crews is not voicing the character despite rampant fan speculation that he would. Doomfist is instead voiced by Sahr Ngaujah.
